Evaluation of Vitek ANI System for Identification of Anaerobic Bacteria
Abstract
Vitek ANI system was used to identify anaerobic bacteria isolated at Severance Hospital and the accuracy was evaluated by conventional method. Both ANI and conventional method faild to identify 3 of 179 isolates (1.7%). The first choice of the
identification by the Vitek system was correct in 90.5% of the isolates. "Excellent" identifications alone were 84.7% for Bacteroides and Fusobacterium, 42.1% for Clostridium and other gram-positive bacilli and 13.0% for Peptostrepto-coccus.
Either
the
second or the hird choice, not the first, was correct identification in 14 (7.8%) isolates: 11 P. magnus and P. prevotii, and one each of C. perfringens, Eubacterium aerofaciens and Lactobacillus catenaforme. It is concluded that ANI system
occasionally
require additional test to differ entiate important Clostridium sp. and to defintely identify species of Peptostreptococcus, but the system is simple to use in clinical laboratory and the identification is rapid and accurate with most of the
isolates.
